Demolitions begin on Ngong Road [Video]

Governor Mike Sonko was at the scene

Past demolitions along Ngong Road

Demolitions were witnessed along Nairobi's Ngong Road on Wednesday morning from as early as 4 am.

Bulldozers brought down structures along the roadside between Mashpark Hotel and Harlequins grounds which were mainly being used by traders and mechanics.

Witnesses say that a group of youths rained down on the structures at the crack of dawn and flattened them without showing any authorization to do so.

Traders who claimed that the youths were hired goons claimed to have lost merchandise to looting.

The youths are also accused of making away with keys to vehicles that had been parked in the garage.

Governor Sonko at the Scene

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko reported to the scene where demolitions were ongoing claiming not to have been aware of the exercise.

The governor clarified that the county government was not behind the move and vowed to pursue legal action against the perpetrators.

Reporters obtained an eviction notice that had been served to the traders in June asking them to vacate the property without explaining why.

The notice signed by one Cecilia Mwaura was refuted by Govenor Sonko and his team. The notice did not bear any stamp or signature from City Hall.

Previous demolitions along the busy road occurred in Kibera area where the government wanted to construct the Ngong Road-Kungu Karumba-Lang’ata link road.
