Tharaka-Nithi County Director of Procurement Lawrence Mutembei had solicited for a bribe of Ksh 50,000 from a contractor identified as Charles Mugendi.
After spirited negotiations, the procurement boss accepted 20,000. However, unknown to him, the contractor had reported him to EACC and a trap had been set up waiting for him.
The commission gave the contractor clearly marked notes to hand over to the procurement boss and deployed officers from the commission to the venue where the procurement boss was to receive his proceeds of corruption.
As soon as he received marked Ksh. 20000, officers from the EACC pounced and recovered the money before taking him in for questioning.
EACC Upper Eastern Regional Coordinator Ignatius Wekesa confirmed the incident, adding that once investigations are complete, the procurement boss will be handed over to Directorate of Public Prosecution to answer to charges of corruption.
The arrest comes at a time when the war against corruption has shifted to procurement bosses with President Uhuru Kenyatta suspending all heads of procurement and accounting units in government.
However, a section of opposition leaders led by Moses Wetangula have poured cold water in the fight against corruption, maintain that there are sacred cows in the war and the public is only being treated to the usual theatrics of harassing small fishes while the big fishes are roaming free.
