On Thursday, Mwendwa told the media that he was hoping that Ruto could pay up the money by March.

He added that he was yet to get word from the DP and the Ministry of Sports.

"My feeling is that the government is up for it, they will pay the boys the Sh50 million. We are waiting for the Sports ministry and the DP give us further details," Mwendwa said.

FKF further promised to be transparent in how the money will be used, saying most of it will got players in the form of bonuses while the rest will be used to settle the team’s debts.

During the match-hyped match at Kasarani Sports Stadium, Kenyan netizens were pessimistic with the possibility of the DP honoring the cash pledge.

Ruto became the subject of memes, with cynical netizens insinuating that he hoped Kenya would lose to Ethiopia.
