Football boss pleads with DP Ruto to honor Sh50 million promise to Harambee Stars

Ruto promised Sh50 million if Kenya beat Ethiopia

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Nick Mwendwa has revealed that Deputy President William Ruto is yet to pay the Sh50 million promised to Harambee Stars ahead of their game with Ethiopia on December 12.

Ruto had pledged Sh50 million is Kenya managed to beat their Ethiopian counterparts.

The Deputy President was present when Harambee Stars beat Ethiopia 3-0, allowing them to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

 

On Thursday, Mwendwa told the media that he was hoping that Ruto could pay up the money by March.

He added that he was yet to get word from the DP and the Ministry of Sports.

"My feeling is that the government is up for it, they will pay the boys the Sh50 million. We are waiting for the Sports ministry and the DP give us further details," Mwendwa said.

 

Pessimistic

FKF further promised to be transparent in how the money will be used, saying most of it will got players in the form of bonuses while the rest will be used to settle the team’s debts.

During the match-hyped match at Kasarani Sports Stadium, Kenyan netizens were pessimistic with the possibility of the DP honoring the cash pledge.

Ruto became the subject of memes, with cynical netizens insinuating that he hoped Kenya would lose to Ethiopia.
