The Interior and Coordination of National Government and Acting Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi has ordered all school buses in the country to change their colours to yellow.
Speaking during a Security Briefing at the Kenya School of Government in Nairobi on Friday, Matiangi said he had given all the schools up to March 30, 2018 to have all their buses painted yellow.
New timelines
He at the same time gave strict new timelines for the school buses to travel.
"School buses time of travel is 6am-6pm. I hereby direct the police to ensure that all the school buses operate from 6am to 6pm only," Matiangi stated.
The new order was part of the 2016 Traffic (Amendment) Bill passed by the 11th Parliament.
According to the Bill, a motor vehicle designated to transport children to or from school, or for any non-school related activity, must be fitted with safety belts designed to be used by children.
The speed limit for all vehicles approaching schools had been also fixed at 50km per hour.
