“I escaped from prison to bury my mother when a magistrate denied me bail,” Sonko said.

Sonko, Nominated MP Maina Kamanda, Nyandarua Woman Rep Faith Gitau and County Assembly Speaker Ndegwa Wahome blamed the judiciary for Gakuo’s death, maintaining that he would still be alive had he been granted bail.

The leaders blasted the judiciary for failing to grant the deceased bail, arguing that he deserved it “given his age, health status and service to the nation”.

Gakuo alongside others were handed a three-year sentences after being found guilty of participating in contributing to the loss of public money during the purchase of a 120-acre cemetery land in Mavoko in 2008, where Sh238 million was paid irregularly.

Gakuo who died on 30 October 2018 at the age of 70 was also fined SH 1 Million.

Notable politicians with whom he had rubbed shoulders during his long service to the public were missing during his final send-off which coincided with the burial of Wiper Part leader Kalonzo Musyoka’s father.
