IEBC sets date for the Nairobi Gubernatorial by-election

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has set February 18, 2021, as the date for the Nairobi Gubernatorial by-election.

"Following declaration of vacancy that occurred in the office of the County Governor, Nairobi City County following the impeachment and subsequently swearing in of the Speaker of the County Assembly of Nairobi City as the Acting County Governor on 21st December, 2020, there shall be a byelection for the County Governor of Nairobi City County on Thursday, 18th February, 2021," stated IEBC.

In the gazette notice published on Tuesday, IEBC chairperson Wafula Chebukati said that Political parties intending to field candidate in the by-election shall submit names of the persons contesting before December 28, 2020.

The electoral commission added that campaigns will begin on January 18, 2021 to February 15, 2021, from 7.00AM to 6.00PM.

"The campaign period for purposes of the Thursday, 18th February, 2021 by-election shall commence on, Monday, 18th January, 2021 and cease on Monday, 15th February, 2021 being 48 hours before the by-election Day," added IEBC.

The announcement comes a few days after former Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko was impeached by Senate.

Sonko was found guilty of four charges which include; gross violation of the Constitution and other laws, abuse of office, violation of national laws and lacking the mental capability to run the county government.
