The student leaders lead by chairman Robinson Asman and Secretary General Richard Ochieng had held a meeting with the vice chancellors on 17 October where they brought up issues they said were urgent.

Among the 8 issues raised were; unwarranted fee increment, poor Wifi connectivity in the campus, poor lighting in the lecture halls, among others.

Through a memo sent to the students on 14 November by the student body, JKUSA, students were to attend an urgent ‘comrades forum’ where the student leaders were to tell the students what would follow. “Due to ignorance by the administration in addressing the issues of the comrades, we hereby call a comrades forum tomorrow (15 November) at hall 3 basketball court after which we shall give a way forward.” Read the memo signed by the chairperson and Secretary General.

Before the unrest began, the administration had sent a memo suspending studies indefinitely.  Sources say the students had been complaining of ‘unjustified’ fee increment.
