Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya with county officials

Kakamega Chief of Staff Robert Sumbi on Thursday succumbed to Covid-19.

Mr Sumbi had served as Governor Wycliffe Oparanya's CoS since 2018 when the governor appointed him.

The deceased had been admitted at Kakemega General Hospital where he had been receiving treatment for the last one week.

Governor Oparanya on Wednesday suspended operations at the county headquarters after a number of county officials were confirmed to be positive for the virus.

The governor also confirmed that 57 health workers in the county had tested positive for the infection.

Covid-19 numbers

According to data provided by the Ministry of Health on Wednesday, 5 new cases had been recorded in the county; one from Mumias East constituency and four others from Mumias West.

Kenya recorded 1,018 new cases bringing the case load to 51,851.
