Kenyans were left amazed after Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana revealed how much a new hospital in his county cost.

The governor announced that the Makueni Mother & Child Hospital cost a total of Sh135 million.

"For a cost of Sh 135 Million, both construction and equipping, the Mother and Child hospital will be able to accommodate 120 adults and 80 neonates at a time," the governor noted as he shared photos of the facility.

His followers were baffled by the photos and proceeded to question why other politicians quote billions for projects that, in their view, were nowhere near in comparison.

What other Hospital Projects normally cost

Auditor General Edward Ouko recently unearthed a major impropriety in Nyeri County where the renovations of Othaya Hospital cost Sh 142 million over the actual cost.

"The ministry reported an expenditure of Sh3, 911,981 for the construction of Othaya sub-county district hospital which accumulated to Sh578, 542,747 for construction as at June 30, 2016 which when compared against the initial contract value of Sh436, 300,798 gives a rise to a variation of Sh142, 241,949 which is about 33 per cent that has not been supported," the Auditor-general's report read in part.

In Kilifi, a hospital that is yet to be completed was costed at Sh 4 Billion which was to be financed by a US NGO.

Mama Lucy Kibaki hospital, which was financed by the Chinese government at the cost of over Sh 500 million, has a 112 bed capacity and was recently approved for renovations at the cost of Sh1.1 billion.
