1 killed, several pupils injured in grisly school bus accident

The school van collided head-on with a trailer.

One person was on Wednesday killed and several pupils injured in a grisly school bus accident in Makueni County.

The deceased, the driver of the school van belonging to Light Academy in Makueni County, died on the spot after the vehicle collided head-on with a trailer near the Sultan Hamud bridge on the Mombasa-Nairobi highway.

Six pupils and a teacher who were injured in the accident were rushed to hospital.

Peter Mudaki, a witness, said the van collided head-on with a trailer as the driver attempted to overtake a number of vehicles at high speed.

“Just before the bridge, the driver of the Nissan overtook a matatu. He then overtook a trailer and as he attempted to overtake the second trailer, he collided head on with an oncoming one," he said.

The accident comes days after a similar accident occurred in Kirinyaga County after a pick-up collided with a school bus.
