Details of ‘exorbitant’ MP Shah Hospital bill that has caused a stir online

The deceased patient is supposed to pay Sh157,285 as Pharmacy charges for staying at the hospital for few hours.

A section of Kenyans online and activists have questioned the charges amounting to nearly Sh900,000 as medical bill slapped on a lady, identified as Matilda Anyango, 32, from Kangemi.

Matilda, who later died at the facility, was hospitalised for hours between Wednesday 11th April at around 9.30pm and Thursday at 10 am.

A close look at the purported medical bill statement by pulselive.co.ke shows that the deceased was to part with Sh157,285 as Pharmacy charges, Sh100,000 anesthetic fees, Sh105,000 as Transfusion fees and an additional Sh300,000 surgeons fee for the night she spent at the facility. All charges would amount to Sh858,355.

For the night, she was to pay Sh42,600 for the bed, leaving Kenyans online with wagging tongues over the exorbitant costs the facility charges.

“Matilda Anyango was stabbed by thugs on 11th April night in Kangemi Slums, she was taken to MP Shah Hospital at around 9:30pm, admitted and then died the following day at 10am. MP Shah is demanding 858,000/- from her very poor family. They have refused to release the body,” activist Boniface Mwangi tweeted on Friday.

Other charges included: Causality procedures valued at Sh500, Theatre Gases at a cost of Sh22,200, Nursing Charges of Sh1,500, an Admission fee of Sh2,000 Laboratory Investigations valued at Sh14,250, Theatres charges amounting to Sh90,500 and procedure fee of Sh20,100 among other charges.

In the turn of events the Hospital’s management wrote to Safaricom Limited seeking a paybill number on behalf of the affected family. The letter failed to say that the patient had died, as it such would mean the bill would accumulate. The letter is dated April 18, six days after she had died.
