National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) on Tuesday warned all matatu operators in regards to erratic increase of fare charges.

The road authority, through a press statement, stated that PSV operators that had hiked fares were at risk of losing their licences.

The statement from NTSA read that, “Consequently, arbitrary increase of fares is contrary to the above provision.

We therefore reiterate that an operator risks revocation of their road service licence should the authority receive a report of such an incidence,”

The move by the body comes after complaints from the public of increased fare charges following the implementation the ban on Matatus entering CBD.

The ban which was lifted on Tuesday by Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, had led to a state of confusion for passengers, who were not aware of the location of the new stages that had been indicated through the a gazettement notice issued by the county government.

Kenyans, who use the public commuter service, complained that they were forced to pay above than normal at the new stages due to a lack of matatus.

The action by the road authorities is set to also curb behavior of matatu operators who have a tendency of hiking fare charges during peak hours and when it rains.

According to section 30(3) (a) of the National Transport and Safety Authority, “The fares imposed for the carrying of passengers are reasonable and ensure fair competition within the transport industry,”

NTSA further urged the public to report such incidences using the free NTSA app which is on Google playstore, where necessary action will be taken on the violators.
