David Mwai’s relatives reveal lucrative offer police offered him before his controversial death

Mwai called his sister to inform her of the offer before he "committed suicide" while in police custody

Mwai’s family has emerged with fresh claims that David was given an offer by the police to walk away from state custody so as to jam the case.

According to the Standard, Mwai called his sister on Wednesday to inform her of the offer that would have seen him walk to freedom but was advised against taking the offer.

Her sister informed the daily that “He (Mwai) called through a number saying a police officer had approached him and asked him to agree to escape from the cells”.

“I advised him against agreeing to the request because he had confessed to his actions. I told him this would expose him to more danger.” Added the sister who requested the paper not to disclose her identity.

The Standard further reported that detectives handling the case were pulled off the matter on the same day that Mwai “committed suicide”, leaving behind a governor in the mix and a victim fighting for his life in what is turning out to be a bloody plot.

Police have maintained that the suspect committed suicide even as a section of the public and the family suspect foul play with activist Boniface Mwangi claiming that Mwai was murdered to cover up a crime.

The whereabouts of Mwai’s wife still remain unkonown with police clarifying that she is not in police custody.

On Saturday, Police spokesman Charles Owino took the media to the room where the suspect reportedly committed suicide and explained how he did so.
