Kidero used the money to plant grass in the Nairobi streets.
The members have started a special investigation into how Dr Evans Kidero used Sh48 million while at City Hall as the Governor.
An earlier audit by the office of the Auditor General has revealed that Sh48 million overdraft withdrawal was done from City Hall’s Co-operative Bank accounts.
The county public accounts committee is seeking to establish the expenditure of the money that was not captured in the budget and shed light on exactly what was procured to inflate the bill to Sh48 million.
“The committee needs to be furnished with details on whether the money was captured in the budget and who authorised the expenditure of the said money,” stated Kilimani MCA Moses Ogeto as quoted by the Standard.
In 2015, City Hall announced that County’s committee on Budget and Appropriations had set aside Sh 40 million to beautify the city with about 1000 youths hired for the project. Renovations were done in various parts of the city, notably the 15km stretch between Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and the Central Business District.
The MCAs are set to evaluate whether the beautification was necessary at the time in the latest onslaught by the incumbent Sonko against Dr Kidero, after he vowed to fight cartels at City Hall in his tenure.
“Who determines whether beautification of the city was necessary? I do not understand why the environment department felt the need to re-do the exercise yet the city had already been beautified,” argued Kwale South MCA, Rose Oganda, the chairman of the Pubic Accounts Committee.
Just last week Thursday, Public Accounts Committee questioned City Hall’s finance department on why the county undertook the exercise twice, citing waste of public resources.
The committee has revealed that it was concerned that by withdrawing more than the county had in its account, it attracted many charges in the form of interest, which continue to haunt the city do date.
