Babu Owino blames closure of UoN to Interior CS Dr Matiang'i

Babu Owino, after his release last week, has now turned his gun to Interior CS Dr Fred Matiang'i.

Through a post on Facebook, Mr Paul Ongili, alias Babu Owino, who is also a former student leader at the institution, claimed that the CS ordered the closure of the institution, only to “postpone a problem.”

“Matiang’i has ordered university senate to close The University of Nairobi indefinitely. This is not the solution but postponing the problem,” Mr Ongili penned on Facebook on Tuesday.

He continued: “Revolution in many countries in the world started from the universities.”

On Monday through his social media channels, claimed that the University of Nairobi students were warming up to stage demonstrations in a bid to push for the increment of finances disbursed to students through the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB).

“Comrades must come out tomorrow in huge numbers to fight this issue of police brutality ones and for all. Helb increment loading…,” he wrote.

The firery comments by the lawmaker come in the wake of an indefinite closure of Kenya’s leading and oldest public university, a decision the institution said was informed by the escalating insecurity.

On Thursday last week, over 27 students were injured by anti riot police who were called to quell the unrest from the students who were protesting the arrest of Embakasi East MP Babu Owino.

Earlier, there were claims that one student may have died during the Thursday protest, a claim the university has denied.

The students on Tuesday barricaded Lower Kabete road in Nairobi demanding the resignation of Vice Chancellor Prof Peter Mbithi.
