The fight against corruption has gone a notch higher with Kenya’s Ambassador to Austria Hassan Wario becoming the latest victim in the onslaught against the vice.

Director of Public Prosecution Nurdin Haji disclosed that Wario will be charged alongside ex sports PS Richard Ekai and former NOCK boss Kipchoge Keino for misappropriation of Rio 2016 funds.

Wario who currently heads Kenya’s diplomatic mission in Austria was at the helm of the sports docket in 2016 when Kenya’s Olympic team was dogged by the shameful scandal resulting in one of the country’s poorest show at the global event.

The statement read in part that “During the Rio Olympics, the Government set aside Sh544 million to facilitate athletes participating in the games. Unfortunately, part of the funds was mismanaged thus denying athletes proper facilitation".

“The DCI undertook investigations which established that various offences were committed in the manner in which the funds allocated for the Rio Olympic Games were managed. The inquiry file was submitted to the DPP with recommendations to charge various persons involved in the management of the games.”

The DPP concluded that part of the funds was mismanaged thus denying athletes proper facilitation and recommended that several felonies were committed with regard to how the funds were allocated.

The officials will be charged with six counts of Abuse of office and four counts of willfull failure to comply with laws relating to the management of public funds.
