McDonald Mariga in awkward interview as Nixon Korir swiftly saves him

Jubilee candidate in the Kibra by-election McDonald Mariga has become the subject of a viral video that captured him in an awkward interview where he struggled to answer a journalist’s questions.

Mariga had on Monday attended the Mariga Cup in Woodley where he played alongside local teams in Kibra.

After the soccer matches, a journalist pulled him aside and proceeded to interview him on the progress of the Kibra by-election.

The journalist posed his question in English which appeared to unsettle Mariga, who responded in Swahili by stating that the day had only been set aside for matters sports.

In an awkward moment, Mariga’s campaign manager, Nixon Korir contradicted his candidate and proceeded to answer the question posed to the former footballer.

Korir, who is also the Lang’ata MP, struggled to fit into the frame as the cameras remained focused on Mariga who is significantly taller and with a wider frame than the MP.

Netizens have widely distributed the video on social media, many of them questioning Mariga’s public speaking skills.

Others faulted Korir for embarrassing his candidate by responding to a question which the former footballer did not want to respond.
