Reports indicate that the accident occurred when a matatu collided with a lorry a few kilometers from Meru Town.
The matatu was trying to overtake a boda boda while on its way to Chuka ferrying people for a dowry presentation ceremony.
Red Cross Central Region coordinator Gitonga confirmed the incident saying:
"Eight passengers died at the scene including the driver. We rushed two survivors to hospital. We are not sure how many passengers were on the motorbike," he told Nairobi News.
The injured persons were rushed to Meru Level 5 Hospital where they were to receive treatment.
This is not the first accident to occur along the Meru-Nairobi highway as earlier on this year three people died while six others incurred injuries after a matatu collided head on with a bus around the Kiaragana area.
