Junet's Somali proverb that made Uhuru burst out in laughter at Bomas

If someone wants your wife...

Suna East MP Junet Mohamed's Somali proverb that made President Uhuru Kenyatta burst out in laughter at Bomas of Kenya during BBI Report launch

Suna East Member of Parliament Junet Mohamed on Wednesday brought a room full of delegates to laughter with a Somali proverb during the launch of the BBI Report.

The legislator, who had been given the honour of coordinating the order of speeches, took a pass at those who may be opposed to the initiative as if to advise they should be ignored.

"Your excellency, kazi yangu ni kidogo sana, ya kuita tu wanasiasa ambao wanaeza haribu hii document kama hawatakubaliana nayo, ili tujue maoni yao iko namna gani. Unajua kazi ya wanasiasa ni ngumu sana, ikiwa kuna kitu hataki hata kiwe kizuri hataki. Ndio Wasomali wana methali inasema, kama mtu anataka bibi yako, hata ukimpa msichana wako ambaye amefika atataka tu huyo mke wako, hatakubali.

"(Your Excellency, my work is very simple, I'm here to invite politicians to speak because they can sabotage this document if they are not allowed to express their views. A politician's job is very hard, a politician can even oppose something good so long as they don't agree with it.)

"(That's why Somalis have a proverb that says, if a man has loved your wife, even if you offer him your daughter who is of age, he will not accept your daughter, he will still want your wife)," Junet illustrated, causing everyone in the room to laugh in amusement.

President Kenyatta was so tickled by the comparison that he bent forward laughing at the MP's joke.

BBI is not about politicians - Governor Hassan Joho

A number of politicians had the opportunity to address the forum including UNSA Chairperson Anne Mvurya, Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula, ANC party leader Musalia Mudavadi, Council of Governors Chair Wycliffe Oparanya, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi, Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho among others.

Governor Joho urged the politicians to acknowledge that the report was prepared for Kenyans and not for their selfish interests.

He insisted that there is need to ensure that everyone is allowed to give their views on the document and they ought to be heard.
