Governor Sonko was also impressed that Ms Mwangi has both "beauty and brains".
"Nairobi beautification goes on. Compliments to my sister & friend @MwangiMvurya for being elected as the Chair of University of Nairobi Students Association (UNSA).
"Ann becomes the 1st female student with beauty & brains in the history of students leadership to be elected in this position," Sonko's tweet read.
Sonko's followers react
A number of Governor Sonko's followers pointed out that his comment came off as sexist while others speculated on her relation to Kwale Governor Salim Mvurya due to her last name.
Ms Mwangi is a law student at the university and managed to garner 24 votes against her closest competitors eight votes.
She was elected by an electoral college in line with the 2016 Universities Amendment Bill signed by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
The electoral colleges are constituted by grouping the students into either academic department, school or faculty blocks.
