Matatu driver shot dead after confrontation

Police have arrested the suspect who had dropped off his girlfriend before the shooting

Police in Kisumu are holding a man for allegedly pumping three bullets into the chest of a matatu driver on Saturday morning after an altercation.

Reports indicate that the suspect identified as Daniel Jaoko who had dropped off his girlfriend at Polyview estate parked his car blocking the way for a matatu driver identified as Peter Otieno who wanted to drive out of the estate.

After a brief exchange with Otieno who wanted to drive out, Jaoko who is a manager at Ray-Green Hotel in Kisumu is said to have pulled out his gun and shot the deceased three times in the chest.

Kisumu County Commander Benson Maweu confirmed the 5AM incident, stating that the suspect is in police custody and will be processed before being arraigned in court.

“We rushed the victim to Avenue Hospital where he succumbed while undergoing treatment,” Maweu said.

15 bullets were recovered by the police upon conducting a thorough search on Jaoko’s car,

A search at the suspect’s house in Nyamasaria area of Kisumu also saw police recover 42 bullets.

Both the suspect and his car are being held at Kondele Police Station.

Maweu faulted the suspect for taking matters in his own hands in a fit of rage, resulting in the death of the matatu driver.

He confirmed that investigations have been launched into the incident.
