Waiguru reveals her 2022 strategy for the 1st time

Power to women

Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has for the first time spoke on the 2022 General Election, revealing the strategy she will be using during the polls.

Making her address at Chatham House, Ms. Waiguru divulged that her role will be to ensure that there are more women vying for the Gubernatorial seat.

"I’m determined that after the next election, we have at least 11 women governors in place," she said.

The former Devolution and Planning CS highlighted that one of the challenges women in politics were facing was lack of support from their male counterparts.

To counter this, Waiguru mentioned that she will be targeting seats where Governors have already served their second term, hence, unable to vie again.

"An issue with getting support from male governors on this is that they think we are after their seats. One way to get support from male governors for a female candidate is to target those who will have completed two terms and can’t run again," she said.

After the 2017 General Election, Waiguru made history by becoming one of the first female Governors to be elected in Kenya.

The Kirinyaga Governor added that women also face vicious attack once endorsed for a top political seat and sometimes violence which include threats of rape.

"But an issue with early endorsement is women are then exposed to a long and vicious time in the spotlight. 2017 was an extremely violent election for women running for office.

"Numerous individuals, I spoke to reported threats of rape and physical violence towards themselves and their children. This then puts off other women considering being a candidate," she said.
