Radical proposal comes in the wake of multi-billion scandals in government

Corrupt state officers could soon find themselves staring at the death penalty if a proposal by Makueni MP Daniel Maanzo sails through.

Maanzo disclosed that he would table the bill in parliament to restore death sentence to serious economic crimes in the wake of a new wave of corruption in which the public has lost billions of shillings.

"Corruption in Kenya is at levels it cannot be fought without the death penalty.

"The option that will safeguard taxpayer's funds is amending the Constitution to have the death penalty back" Maanzo said.

The proposal would however have to go through a referendum as Kenya's Highest court, the Supreme Court has made the death sentence illegal in Kenya.

This comes as president Kenyatta pledged to decisively tackle the vice, vowing to spare no one in a crackdown that has seen senior state officials nabbed and produced in court.

His comments come as the Judiciary come under heavy attack for allegedly derailing the war on corruption and handing over lenient bail terms and sentences to suspects with some going free.

The recent surge in corruption has attracted an outrage from the public after the NYS, NCPP and Irrigations board among others in which more than 30 Billion shillings cannot be accounted for.
