Chebukati hit with a 30-day deadline

Chebukati in hot water

On Thursday the Employment and Labour Relations court summoned Mr Chebukati and two commissioners; Abdi Guliye and Boya Molu over the suspension of Mr Chiloba.

The three were ordered to appear before the court within 30-days to explain why Chiloba was still on suspension despite court orders instructing that he be reinstated.

The court wants the three to show cause why they should not be jailed for a period of six months for disobeying the orders.

When Chiloba was first sent on a three-moth compulsory leave over procurement queries involving the 2017 General Election, he filed a petition stating that the decision was unfair and proper procedures were nt adhered to.

The IEBC CEO won the case and the labour court ordered Chebukati to reinstate him.

However, 10 hours after the judgment, Chebukati suspended Chiloba stating: "As you are aware under clauses 3 and 5 of your employment contract, you are responsible for the prudent financial management of the commission’s finances, as well as the execution of all the commission’s programmes and plans in line with the constitutional mandate."

"The issues under investigation are weighty and touch on your role as the accounting officer," he said in a statement.
