Details of DP Ruto’s conditions before supporting referendum and what made him change his mind

What made DP Ruto change his mind and support Raila's calls for a referendum?

Speculation is rife that Ruto’s change of heart was informed by a desire to keep Raila Odinga in check after his a section of Rift Valley MPs warned that Odinga was using the referendum to redeem his career in readiness for 2022.

The DP may also have yielded to pressure from his allies led by Joshua Kutuny (Cherangany) and his Kipkelion West counterpart Hilary Koskei who had warned that he risked being isolated depending on how he handled the calls for referendum.

Yesterday, the lawmakers warned that “Mr. Ruto has to be careful in the way he handles this issue of referendum as it can isolate him from the rest of the people in government and scuttle his efforts to unite the country and solidify his political base ahead of the 2022 elections.

The DP disclosed that he will support the move only if it is in the best interest of Kenyans with the aim of improving lives by easing the burden on Kenyans and not pushed by selfish political agenda.

Another condition set by the DP is that the amendments should not be geared towards creating a post for Raila Odinga.

Should this be the case, Ruto vowed to vote against it if the planned changes are meant to create a prime minister’s position for ODM leader Raila Odinga.

The development comes amidst concerns that the DP could find himself a lone ranger with a growing number of Jubilee MPs endorsing the push for a referendum.
