Raila Odinga’s elder brother Dr. Oburu Oginga has accused the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) of unfairly targeting him after the commission seized a prime piece of land that was irregularly acquired from him.

In a press conference at his Milimani home on Sunday afternoon, Oburu lamented that the commission is wrongly targeting him because he is the elder brother of ODM leader Raila Odinga.

“This is political hogwash; they (EACC) are singling me out because I am the brother of Raila. It is not my mistake to be Raila’s brother, I did not apply to be one. Neither Raila nor me need the parcel of land.” Oburu said.

“They should be going for mega corruption-people like the DP who has acquired huge plots from the Kenya Civil Aviation and put up a magnificent facility.” He added.

Oburu maintained that he got the land in question in 2001 from the government after it was sold in a public process which saw more than 100 pieces of land sold.

“I must state that at no time have I illegally acquired land in the country…I don’t know how I acquired government land irregularly in 2001.

“I acquired the plot like any other Kenyan acquires a plot, I paid government and if the government wants it for any other commission then it should have refunded me the monies I paid for the plot.

The land in question was one of two parcels grabbed from Kisumu Railways valued at Ksh60 million and was seized on Friday by EACC.

"In the wake of the presidential directive concerning repossession of the Kenya Railways land and the ongoing construction of the Kisumu Port, this is quite a milestone for the anti-graft body," The commission's Chief Executive Officer Twalib Mbarak stated on Friday.

“I do not expect EACC to come and start stating as if they have made the discovery of America because of an eighth of an acre (which I acquired legally).” Oburu stated.
