Majority leader impeached against party directives in show of defiance

In a rare show of defiance legislators rebelled against party directives and ousted Homabay County majority leader Richard Ogindo.

The decision was arrived at during a special session held on Friday and which was chaired by the assembly’s Deputy Speaker Evans Mareba.

Ogindo who had the backing of ODM party leaders and officials was effectively replaced with Kanyidota MCA Walter Muok.

The move which saw a complete overhaul of the assembly’s leadership was hailed as the dawn of consultative leadership.

Homa Bay Central MCA Julius Nyambok take over from nominated MCA Ruth Ombura as deputy Majority Leader with Dan Were being elected to be the Majority chief whip.

“Today we mark the era of chest thumping and bragging in this assembly leadership. I am going to use my responsibility in uniting MCAs of this assembly,” Nyambok said.Top on the priority of the new team is transparency in resource utilization and sealing all loopholes in a bid to tame corruption.

“We have learnt mistakes from the past leadership of this assembly. We will ensure the loopholes are sealed,” Were said.

This brings to an end a protracted battle over house leadership that attracted the attention of top ODM party leadership.

Party Secretary General Edwin Sifuna had written to the MCAs demanding a response within seven days why disciplinary action should not be taken against them.
