Leaked document reveals how Uhuru's deal with NTV boss collapsed just before Raila's swearing in
Interesting revelations
Business Today published a memo reportedly written by NMG Editor-in-Chief Tom Mshindi, and addressed to his subordinates, directing them not to cover Odinga's controversial inauguration.
The memo was penned after Mshindi, together with other senior editors and media owners, met with President Kenyatta on the Friday before Odinga was sworn in.
The head of state had directed all the mainstream media houses to desist from live coverage of the NASA mock inauguration.
However, the plan did not materialise after Mshindi's junior at NMG, NTV Managing Editor Linus Kaikai issued a statement that exposed the President's private agreement with the media owners and editors.
Kaikai, in his capacity as the Chairman of the Kenya Editor's Guild, accused the government of intimidating the media and urged the fourth estate to defy the order.
When Tuesday came, NTV together with KTN News and Citizen, went ahead to offer live coverage of the ongoings at Uhuru Park until the government switched off their transmission.
Mshindi has since made editorial changes, appointing Pamela Asigi as NTV Editor who will directly report to him - effectively cutting down Kaikai's powers as the Managing Editor.
Here is Mshindi's full memo, courtesy of Business Today:
There has been some conversations about what we might or might not do with regard to coverage of tomorrow’s events. This note will serve as the guideline on how NTV will proceed.
I have discussed this with Linus and we are aligned.
Regards,
Tom
