NASA's new plan to swear-in Kalonzo emerges

There have been questions on whether National Super Alliance (NASA) co-principal Kalonzo Musyoka will be part of the swearing-in ceremony scheduled for December 12, 2017, owing to the fact that he has been outside the country attending to his ailing wife, Pauline.

Emerging reports now indicate that the NASA People's assemblies organising committee are considering to swear-in Mr. Kalonzo as the Deputy President while in Germany.

It is said that the Committee is in consultations on the way forward as the Wiper Party leader might not be able to be back in the country for the Tuesday ceremony.

The team also expressed concerns on of the implications of proceeding with the swearing-in ceremony in the absence of the Wiper Party leader.

"The presidency is a joint ticket of the president and deputy president, as NASA our president Raila Odinga is in the country and is ready for the swearing in but the DP is out of the country,” Dr. Jared Siso, executive director of Wiper said.

Though Mr. Kalonzo has more than once reiterated his commitment to stay in the Alliance, on Thursday Wiper Secretary General Mutula Kilonzo Junior stirred confusion after stating that his party had not been notified of any plans to swear in Odinga.

The Makueni Senator mentioned he was doubtful that the event would take place since his party leader was out of the country and no consultations had been made to facilitate the ceremony.

“It is uncertain whether the swearing-in will take place because NASA co-leader Kalonzo Musyoka, who is also the Wiper Party leader, is currently out of the country and it still remains unclear whether he will have returned by December 12."

At the same time, Wiper Party Deputy Leader Farah Maalim publicly declared that he will not be part of the swearing-in ceremony.

Speaking during a television interview, Mr. Maalim distanced himself from the plans to have his party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, take an oath of Deputy President alongside ODM’s Raila Odinga on December 12 as earlier announced by the former Premier.

“As someone with a legal background, I will like to uphold the law. I have not been part of any process that is arranging for the swearing in of Raila Odinga,” the former National Assembly deputy Speaker said.

He added: “I will hesitate to endorse any 'swearing in' because that is a recipe for chaos.”
