The suspension coincided with a crisis meeting attended by the NASA principals.

Confirming the move, the leaders appointed by the coalition to spearhead the process led by economist and NASA strategist David Ndii, said they have suspended the People's Assembly in support of the unity process initiated by President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga.

"We have accepted and we acknowledge that its better to reason together than alone. We are therefore suspending the peoples assembly process," Ndii said in a press conference at Okoa Kenya offices.

While announcing the formation of the People’s Assemblies late last year, Odinga said the formation will be a broad based forum consisting of elected leaders and the leadership of other sectors of society in particular workers, civil society, religious leaders, women, youth and economic interest groups.

The assemblies, Nasa said, have a taskforce that will be charged with coming up with suggestions of how to change the Constitution including the structure of government and the elections regime.

Already, the People's Assembly had been passed in over 15 counties nationally.

Surprise meeting

Last Friday, President Kenyatta and Odinga surprised Kenyans including those close to them after their meeting at Harambee House where they resolved to set aside their political differences for the sake of national unity and urged Kenyans to move forward together as a united people.

The announcement coincided with a meeting being held at the Stoni Athi Resort in Athi River by the NASA Principals Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka, Musalia Mudavadi and Moses Wetangula.

The meeting is expected to deliberate on the future of the coalition following the latest developments including the unity deal struck by Kenyatta and Odinga which the other principals complained of not being involved.
