A number of prominent Kenyan politicians made news for all the wrong reasons in 2018.

From love affairs that were exposed in public, physical fights at police stations, a case of a revoked degree and not forgetting absurd remarks that left members of the public questioning the level of ignorance among our leaders.

1. Peter Ndambiri

Kirinyaga deputy governor Peter Ndambiri was busted in the act with a married woman during the 2018 Devolution Conference in Kakamega County.

Those who caught the DG filmed the naked DG and his female companion as they explained why they had engaged in the illicit affair.

Ndambiri claimed to have been set up by the men who filmed. He alleged that they wanted to extort him.

His wife, however, said that he had forgiven her husband for the affair.

2. Mithika Linturi

Meru Senator Mithika Linturi probably had the worst year in terms of headlines.

At the beginning of the year the senator was battling the University of Nairobi over the cancellation of his law degree.

The university had claimed that the senator used fake results to gain admission into the university and deregistered the degree.

They were later ordered by the court to award him the degree and reinstate him to the post graduate class he was taking.

By the end of 2018, Linturi was engrossed in a bitter fight with his wife of five years to the point that they fought in public.

His wife, Marriane Kitany claimed that Linturi threatened to kill her at their Runda home and she proceeded to make a statement with the police over the matter.

In the midst of the disagreements between the two, the couple's househelp in Maua, Meru County died while in their rural home.

3. Okoth Obado

Migori Governor Okoth Obado dominated headlines for weeks in September and October 2018.

Governor Waititu was weighing in on the issue of buildings erected on riparian land that were being demolished by the Nairobi County government.

"...if your house is next to the river you should be told to cater for the cost of diverting the river to ensure it moves a bit..." the governor advised.

Waititu was also caught asking Governor Mike Sonko to abuse the powers of his office to secure the release of his wife who was arrested for owning a building in government's land.

5. Mike Sonko

The Nairobi county boss had a number of controversial moments during his first year as governor.

His 2017 running mate Polycarp Igathe resigned from the deputy governor's docket citing "difficulty to earn the governor's trust". Shortly after, reports leaked that Sonko was running City Hall in questionable ways.

Reports indicated that the governor is accustomed to running county affairs while under the influence.

A local daily claimed that Sonko masked alcoholic drinks in juice boxes and sipped them as from 9 a.m. in the morning.

In November, the governor forced an American accent while delivering an address at the Blue Economy Conference.

He would later explain that he had chosen to speak with a twang to suit the foreigners who had gathered in the city.
