Former Prime Minister will make his first visit to DP Ruto’s backyard of North Rift since the last elections amidst political heat generated by an alleged plot to assassinate the Deputy President William Ruto and 2022 succession politics.

Odinga will be in the region courtesy of an invitation by Cherangany MP Joshua Kuttuny- a friend-turned-fierce critic of the DP and will be received by Elgeyo-Marakwet Governor Alex Tolgos among others.

“I have received the invite and I will personally be there to welcome the former prime minister,” said Mr Tolgos.

The former Prime minister will be the chief guest at a function in Chebara Primary School in Marakwet West to celebrate the retirement of Cherangany MP Joshua Kutuny’s mother-in-law, Ms Ruth Kiptoo, who is quitting teaching after 40 years in service.

“On behalf of my family, I take this opportunity to welcome the public and all leaders to attend the event,” Kuttuny said.

Preparations are in top gear to host the ODM party leader with area leaders welcoming him to the region that widely rejected his 2017 candidature through the ballot.

Elgeyo-Marakwet ODM chairman Micah Kigen revealed that although many politicians from the region are vocal critics of the handshake, many locals support the deal that saw peace and calm return to Kenya after a heated election and it will be Odinga’s turn to explain to them what the deal is all about.

“One of his core responsibilities as a key partner in the handshake with the President is to explain to the people the reason why togetherness and cohesion are the most important things we currently need in the country,” said Kigen.

Odinga, Ruto in Western

Odinga's visit will be precedded with a public event in western today (Saturday) with DP Ruto also attending a public function in the same region, barely 60 kilometers from where Odinga will be.

Odinga will join mourners at the final send-off of former Amagoro MP Oduya Oprong in Teso, Busia County while DP Ruto who has intensified his tours in western Kenya where Odinga still enjoys massive support will be at an Anglican Church of Kenya function in the neighboring Kakamega County.

DP Ruto and his allies have in recent days slammed a section of the Cabinet and Jubilee party leadership for allegedly undermining him and plotting to scuttle his 2022 bid.

Most notable is an alleged plot to assassinate him that saw Cabinet Secretaries Sicily Kariuki (Health) Joe Mucheru (ICT) and Peter Munya (Industrialization) report to the DCI but leave without recording statements.
