Security guard reveals the other side of Uhuru

Adan Kassim Olow was interviewed by the Standard on his days as a security guard at Retna Apartments in Lavington.
One of the tenants at the apartment was the youthful Uhuru who had just returned from the United States.
The unassuming security guard did not actually know that one of his tenants was the son of a former President, until one day when Mama Ngina paid his son a visit.
The former First Lady had not informed Uhuru of his visit, and Adan, not knowing who she was, was reluctant to open the gate.
He rushed to Uhuru’s apartment and informed him of the unannounced visitor.
Adan recalls that the 25-year young man was shocked at seeing his mother’s car before he personally opened the gate.
“He quickly opened the gate. It was such a surprise, this was unlike other tenants,” the retired security remembers.
After Mama Ngina had left, Uhuru approached Adan and gave him a list that included his mother, his uncle George Muhoho, and cousin Ngengi Muigai – asking him to always allow them without delay.
“Never keep these three waiting at the gate. But as for the young boys, I will be dealing with them personally,” the fresh graduate of Amherst University directed.
Another important visitor that the security guard recalls is Margaret Kenyatta who was dating the founding President’s son.
The two married in 1989 at a colourful ceremony after which the current President went on to live at his family’s tea estate in Lari, before moving to Karen, and later at his current house that sits next to State House.
