According to the police, the accident was caused by a tyre burst during heavy downpour that pounded the area early Tuesday morning.

The police have also disclosed that Gakuru's bodyguard who was in the same car is in serious condition while the driver was said to be out of danger.

However, unconfirmed reports say his personal assistant has also passed away after the accident.

The accident occured at Kabati Makenji area on the Thika-Muranga road as the governor was on his way to Nairobi.

The governor had earlier been rushed to the Thika Level 5 Hospital in critical condition after the accident.

The late Gakuru's body has already been transferred to the Lee Funeral Home in Nairobi.

Gakuru has only served as Governor for less than two months.

He succeeded Governor Samuel Wamathai who took over the leadership of the County after the death of Nyeri first Governor Nderitu Gachagua.
