Senator escapes attack
Mr Wambua had attended a church service in Mwingi together with Governor Charity Ngilu who is seen as his political rival.
The Senator's announcement that he would address members of the press after the church service did not sit well with the youths.
He announced that he wanted to address graft which had found its way inside the Kitui County government.
However, Mr Wambua did not get the opportunity as the rowdy youths surrounded him and started yelling and shouting demanding he leaves the premises.
As the scuffle unfolded some young men who were part of the crowd attempted to grab the Kitui Senator but luckily his aides intervened and rescued him.
Later in the day, the Senator addressed journalists at a hotel where he urged Governor Ngilu to step up the fight against corruption.
Senator Wambua alleged he had written several letters to the governor to blow the whistle on suspected “mega corruption” in some departments and called for action.
“My last letter was in December, in which I mentioned to her cases of mega corruption and outright theft in the departments. I advised her to hold the officers in charge criminally responsible,” he said.
Wambua claimed he had evidence of suspected corruption and vowed to forward the evidence to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission "and other relevant bodies".
