On Monday, the City County of Nairobi revealed that the controversial Nairobi Business Community, which Moses Kuria steers, claimed to have fully booked the venue on January 30, alongside two other churches, locking out the hyped Nasa event.
“Today we conducted an inspection tour of Uhuru Park grounds ahead of the much awaited Free and Voluntary Medical Camp on the 30th of January. I was accompanied by my colleagues Hon GG Murugara (Tharaka), Hon Rindikiri Murwithania (Buuri) and eminent Nairobi businessmen,” Moses Kuria said, hours before the closure of the venue by Sonko’s administration.
Nairobi County on Wednesday morning announced the closure of Uhuru Park for an unspecified time.
“Notice is hereby given to the General Public that Uhuru Park Grounds is scheduled to undergo phased improvement works in order to enhance recreational usefulness to its visitors. We apologise for any inconveniences caused,” read the notice issued by County Secretary Leboo Ole Morintat.
City Hall in a public notice said that Uhuru Park will remain closed from Wednesday, January 23 (today), until further notice to allow for “phased improvement”.
The County government revealed that during the time of closure, Uhuru Park will remain out of bounds to the public for any gatherings or meetings.
Meanwhile, Amani National Congress secretary general Godfrey Osotsi affirmed on Wednesday morning affirmed that the Raila Odinga oath will take place in Nairobi, but failed once again to state the venue.
ODM's Director of Communication Philip Etale, however, in a tweet said Uhuru Park was only among the five options the coalition had in mind.
"Was Uhuru's inauguration held at Uhuru Park? Panick mode [sic]. Uhuru Park, as I said, was just number 5 options," Mr Etale said.
Earlier, Mose Kuria claimed that the planned swearing-in fete for Raila Odinga had been cancelled in an online charm officensive to divert the attention of the coalition.
