A press statement from the CBK confirmed the appointment, stating that the task force would recommend strategies to harness the potential of digital finance and financial technology to advance SDGs.
Digitalization of Finance
"I fully concur that digitalization of finance has great potential in facilitating achievement of the SGDs," Dr Njoroge stated.
"The invitation is also an important recognition of Kenya's success in digital finance and financial inclusion, with lessons that have been useful for other countries," he added.
Dr Njoroge, while accepting his appointment noted that the invitation was an important recognition of Kenya's success in digital finance.
On his part, Secretary-General Guterres stated: "We have already seen how technology has helped expand financial inclusion-itself an important goal- by 1.2 billion people in just six years."
He added:: "But we have only just begun to tap the potential of digital finance and investment to meet the broader agenda set forth in the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement on climate change."
Experts
The Task Force’s membership includes experts from the investment community, capital markets, government, and civil society, as well as leading banks and innovators in digital payments.
In January, the Task Force will meet in Davos, Switzerland and is expected to present its preliminary report of recommendations to the Secretary-General in September.
It will be supported by a Secretariat hosted within the United Nations Capital Development Fund which has extensive experience in digital finance globally.
