Uhuru's urgent request to the United Nations

Uhuru made the request during the visit by the United Nations General Assembly President at State House, Nairobi.

At the meeting, Kenyatta requested Lajčák to use his networks to help in the consolidation and strengthening of UNEP and UN-Habitat headquarter functions in Nairobi.

Key in the discussion was the ongoing reforms of the UN under the ‘Secretary General’s Global Service Delivery Model (GSDM)’, where Kenyatta appealed for Nairobi to be picked to host the UN’s service centre for the region.

The high level meeting was attended by Chief of State and Head of Public Service Joseph Kinyua and Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Amb. Amina Mohamed.

UNGA President Miroslav Lajčák is in the country for the three-day UN Environment Assembly (UNEA) in Nairobi.

This year’s Assembly that has over 190 UN member states, aims at coming up with a main framework to tackle the global menace of pollution as well as other issues relating to environmental conservation.

Lajčák praised Kenya's decision to ban the manufacture, sale and use of plastic bags that is seen as a major step towards reduction of plastic-related pollution in the country.

He called on all UN member states to commit to implement concrete domestic policies and laws to make the planet pollution-free.

“Our collective goal must be to embrace ways to reduce pollution drastically. Only through stronger collective action, beginning in Nairobi this week, can we start cleaning up the planet globally and save countless lives,” Lajčák stated.
