President Uhuru Kenyatta caught his bodyguards unawares by making a 4-hour-long detour from his schedule.
The president, who was in Kisumu for former Youth Fund boss Bruce Odhiambo's burial, missed his flight to make an unscheduled stopover with special AU envoy Raila Odinga.
"The pilot had started the engine and the president was due to board when the unexpected happened.
"We saw Raila pull him aside, whisper something to him and the plans quickly changed. The pilot had to turn off the engine," a state official told reporters.

The president dropped most of his security and ended up with two Prados, unmarked by escorts.
"It was unbelievable. It happened so fast, everyone was thrown into a spin.
"No one knew where the two were going at dusk without security escorts. We later heard they were at the port," the official further relayed.
Former Prime Minister Odinga had taken the president to the Kisumu Port to show him the dredging machine he recently launched to clear water hyacinth on the lake.
"The president was shocked that he could not see water, as the weed had covered every bit of the lake.
"He looked at the prototype hyacinth harvester and said it was too small," the state official confirmed.
The two leaders were joined by a number of other prominent personalities for fish and Ugali at the Yatch Club.
