A survivor of the Thursday tragic accident along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway told journalists that the matatu driver was avoiding a snake when he went into a head on collision with a lorry.
The grisly accident claimed the lives of eight people.
Speaking from her hospital bed, Elizabeth Mwongeli, mentioned that seconds before the collision the matatu driver shouted that he had seen a snake.
However, the 28 –year-old noted that she was unsure whether the snake was hit in the process. Mwongeli was taking a sick child to a hospital from Salama when the accident happened.
The two are currently admitted at Machakos public hospital together with seven others who sustained severe injuries.
Another victim divulged that the matatu driver, who died on the spot, had been warned by passengers against driving dangerously but dismissed them noting that he was an experienced driver.
The accident comes barely two days after more than 20 people were killed in a grisly accident at Kambu area on the Mombasa-Nairobi highway.
