Tanzanian President John Pombe Magufuli asks ministers to smoke weed to “toughen up

Tanzanian President John Pombe Magufuli has excited Kenyan netizens after a video of him encouraging his ministers to smoke bhang emerged.

In the viral video, Magufuli urges the Ministers to smoke bhang to give them courage and boldness to confront lazy contractors.

The Tanzania President, however, warns the senior government officials to smoke the substance in private so as to avoid encouraging the public to follow suit.

I am urging the minister and other officials to be very strict. If you can, smoke the bhang from Njombe so that you become bold, do it. But smoke it in private so that citizens do not follow suit. That way, when you go to inspect projects, the engineers and the contractors will do a thorough job,” Magufuli said while launching a project in Njombe Region – Southern Tanzania.

The Tanzanian head of state’s remarks have been widely shared by Kenyans on social media platforms – some making a case for the legalisation of the drug.

Tanzania, just like Kenya, has illegalised marijuana use even though the substance is widely sold in the black market.

South Africa, Lesotho, and Botswana are the only African countries that have legalized marijuana use.
