Passengers dead after Matatu crashed into Lorry

Three people perished while 11 others were left nursing injuries after an accident on the Kericho-Litein road.

Kericho County police commander Silas Gichunge said that a matatu collided with a trailer outside Exotic Hotel on Monday.

Two people died on the spot while another passenger was pronounced dead on arrival at the Kericho Sub County Hospital.

Three other passengers are said to be in critical condition at the same hospital.

Gichunge told journalists that the driver of the Nissan matatu tried to overtake three other vehicles when it collided head-on with a trailer that was heading towards Litein.

The county commander warned drivers to be extra vigilant especially during this festive season as scores travel for the holidays.

He attributed the accident to the carelessness of the driver, saying it could have been avoided had the driver exercised patience.

The bodies of the three deceased have been moved to the mortuary.

Accident fatalities rise

This year’s road crash fatalities have exceeded those of last year, according to a report released by the National Transport and Safety Authority.

The latest survey results by NTSA reveal that 3,225 people had lost their lives on the roads by December 2, 2019, compared to 2,827 who died by the date in 2018.

The most vulnerable people are pedestrians whereby 1,247 had lost their lives.
