Tina’s Education Centre in the heart of the Nairobi slum has an open sewer which pupils need to go through before getting to the classroom.

The school's playground and some of the classrooms are also flooded with raw sewage with a pungent smell always hanging around the institution.

The Education centre which was started 12 years ago has been in this state for the past two years, posing a health risk to the 140 pupils and 12 teachers.

However, after the report was highlighted by the Nation Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero has called for the immediate closure of the institution.

Speaking to journalists in Karura, Mr Kidero noted that the school will be closed until it adheres to the health standards stipulated by the Ministry of Health.

“We were not aware of its existence and it is unfortunate that such a school was in operation. We are going to close it and ensure that children are not exposed to diseases,” he said.

Mr Kidero divulged that Tina Education Centre was not licenced by the Ministry of Education.

“I have just checked our system and the school is not there,” he said.
