Motorists escaped injuries during the Friday morning accident near Marula farm in Naivasha.
A driver of one of the tankers was seriously injured but rescued before catching fire in the accident which caused a major traffic snarl up that stretched for over two kilometres.
The accident is said to have occurred after one of the tanker's driver that was heading to Nakuru from Naivasha was attempting to overtake a fleet of vehicles.
Witnesses stated that the truck rammed into an oncoming tanker while the occupants of the trailer heading to Nakuru managed to escape while one occupant in the other tanker was left trapped.
A few minutes after the crash, the tankers that were ferrying diesel burst into flames, according to the witness accounts.
Naivasha OCPD Samuel Waweru confirmed the accident adding that the injured driver had suffered leg fractures and he was receiving treatment at the Naivasha Sub-County hospital.
NTSA statistics on accidents
According to May 2019, statistics by the NTSA, pedestrians remain the most vulnerable group of road users with 235 having died out of 630 people who have lost their lives on the road since the year began.
Survey statistics results by the National Transport and Safety Authority indicated that the fatalities were as a result of motorcycling have gone down to 127 from 136 by the same period last year.
NTSA indicated that the number of road crash victims this year slightly surpassed those who died in 2018.
According to the latest survey, by May 9, 2019, a total of 1,192 people had died on the road compared to 1,054 who died by the same date last year.
