Former president Moi's, Kibaki's ID numbers registered nine other voters
Moi's and Kibaki's ID numbers 1 and 2 have been used to register other voters. Kibaki's number was used to register eight other voters.
Moi’s ID number, 1 or 0000001, has been used to register a one Joseph Marrion Nchabani Mwika, indicated to have been born on January 1, 1968, and whose unique identity in the BVR system is 575114, a local daily has reported.
Shockingly, however, Moi’s name does not appear in the BVR registers when his ID number is keyed in.
Instead it is Mwika’s name that pops up, giving credence to fears that the electoral commission register may have been corrupted as recently alleged by the opposition chief Raila Odinga.
On the other hand, Kibaki’s ID number, 2 or 00000002, has been used to register eight different voters, namely Gitonga Wilson Kimathii, Kanja Julius Ngede Kihinge, Evans Kariuki Kirinya, Victoria Gatwiri, Mu Ko Mugara, Duncan Muia, Mbinya Wanjiru, and Caroline Nduta.
Questions have emerged on the possibilities using one identity card number, which is usually unique from the National Registration Bureau, to register eight different persons.
Already all the eight registered voters under Kibaki’s number have been assigned unique identification numbers in the BVR system, meaning they can vote.
“On Thursday, we established that Kibaki’s ID, replaced as a duplicate on October 11, 2005, is not registered as his in the voter’s list,” a local daily has written.
Kibaki’s spokesperson, Gituku Ngare, accused the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission clerks, who agree to use such numbers to register voters.
“The people who are receiving those ID numbers and registering people using them are to blame first because of their idiocy. It is common sense that such rare numbers can only be used by VIPs. I am alarmed,” Ngare told the press.
In the ongoing mass voter registration, over 128,000 voters had related registration details, an anomaly the IEBC said was correcting.
Among the dignitaries affected has been the Coalition for Reform and Democracy (CORD) co principals Raila Odinga and his Wiper Party counterpart Kalonzo Musyoka whose identification numbers were used to register other voters.
The mass voter registration exercise is coming to a close of its third week tis Sunday, even as the commission misses the mark that was earlier set at 6 million new voters, for the last two weeks, the IEBC registered 1.5 million new voters.
