Woman Rep badly beaten up by male colleague at Parliament buildings

Shameful incident

Wajir Woman Rep Fatuma Gedi badly beaten up Wajir East MP Rashid Kassim at Parliament buildings

Wajir Woman Representative Fatuma Gedi is nursing injuries after she was physically assaulted by her colleague, Wajir East MP Rashi Kassim.

"I have just been assaulted in Parliament by Wajir East MP Rashid Kassim," Gedi told journalists at Parliament buildings.

Gedi said Kassim confronted her at Parliament buildings parking lot and demanded to know why the Woman Rep, who sits in the Budget Committee, had not pushed for allocation of funds for Wajir East where he is the MP.

After a brief heated conversation, Kassim slapped the Woman Rep as Homa Bay Woman Representative Gladys Wanga and other witnesses watched helplessly.

Gedi was later taken to Karen Hospital for first aid treatment before recording the matter at Parliament Police Station - OB 20/13/6/2019.

Physical fights among parliamentarians in Kenya are not uncommon although there are rare instances where women have been assaulted in Parliament.

In 2015, Mbita MP Millie Odhiambo went public about an assault that took place on the floor of Parliament.

The MP said a male MP from Mt Kenya had slapped her and attempted to pull down her panties.
