President Uhuru Kenyatta on Saturday sent a warning to National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) officials over the embezzlement of funds.

The President spoke during the launch of the Universal Health Coverage biometric registration in Mombasa County.

President Kenyatta conveyed that the government hopes to provide cancer treatment, psychiatric care among other services at a fee of Sh.6,000 per household per annum.

"Past initiatives to improve our healthcare system have not been successful because of fraud and mismanagement challenges.

"The scheme we are launching today must be a success and that's why I'm asking the NHIF to ensure the precious funds committed to its custody by both subscribers and supporters are utilized properly with the utmost level of transparency and accountability. Any person who attempts to defraud the NHIF or abuse its processes will be dealt with accordingly as provided for in our laws," the president stated, adding a sarcastic remark at the end.

He went on to reiterate the sentiment, promising that whoever will be accused of embezzlement of UHC funds will live to regret it.

"I want to close by saying I know we can do this and especially Members of Parliament, let us not waste time debating things because we all know what we want.

"Those charged with the responsibility of safeguarding these funds, I promise you that if you do not handle these funds with the care and caution it requires, some of us will go to very extreme lengths to ensure that you shall regret it for the rest of your lives.

"Let me be clear, we can no longer allow game plays in this sector," the President stated.
