Who Bewitched You? Bishop tells off MPs after chasing Zulekha Hassan out of Parliament

Your mothers breastfed you everywhere, respect mothers- Bishop tells MPs

MP Zulekha Hassan with baby in parliament chambers

Bishop Godfrey Migwi has called out the National Assembly after Kwale Woman Rep Zulekha Hassan was chased out of the chambers for bringing her baby.

The outspoken pastor questioned MPs for asking Ms Hassan out of Parliament chambers yet the Parliamentary system was adapted from the western world.

"When a white lady MP breastfed her child in the Australian parliament, all Africans and the world at large praised her, it was breaking news. When one of our own brought her child in parliament we condemned her, called her names," Pastor Migwi stated.

"We are our own colonizers and our own worst enemies. Who bewitched Africans? You praise white people but disrespect one of our own for doing the same thing," he added.

 Protect young babies

He reminded MPs that laws should protect young children anywhere in the country and allow mothers to bring their kids to work if they don't have help or caregivers.

The vocal pastor also called for safe spaces to be created for mothers to breastfeed their children anywhere without being shamed.

"I will say let the mothers breastfeed their children's anywhere they feel it's ok with them, even you waheshimiwas once you were breastfed in matatus with your mother's and some in the bus stage and no one complained," Migwi stated.

There is a lot of social stigma attached to mothers breastfeeding their children in public spaces.

A lactation room in its simplest form is a private space where a nursing mother can express breast milk for her baby.
