The victim popularly known as Jayboy who hailed from Amaigbo in the Nwangele Local Government Area of the state was awaiting his call-up letter from the National Youth Service Corps programme before he met his untimely demise, Punch reports.
Punch correspondents learned that the 22-year-old was reportedly shot dead on Wednesday at about 10:30 pm.
Sources reportedly revealed that the incident took place close to the
Davida Hostel on Aladinma Street, popularly known as IMSU back gate.
Speaking on conditions of anonymity, students claimed that the deceased had been targeted by his killers seeing as they approached him and shot him repeatedly in the chest before making their escape.
The killing was also linked to a cult war between rival fraternities on the campus, which has reportedly claimed the lives of many students on campus.
Punch reports that the student lamented over the killings, adding that the situation affected their lives as well as their academic pursuits, putting both in jeopardy.
They went on to urge the management of the school to tighten security on campus as soon as possible as their first semester examinations are ongoing.
When reached, the Public Relations Officer for the institution, Obi Njoku, confirmed the killing of the student while giving assurance that the management is working hard to make sure that the killers face justice.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Andrew Enwerem, a Deputy Superintendent of Police said he had yet to be briefed as at the time he was contacted.
