AFC Leopards axe key players ahead of crucial Tusker match

AFC Leopards have suspended five key players from their squad on disciplinary grounds.

The five, club top scorer Kepha Aswani, Lucas Indeche, Yusuf Juma, Charles Bruno and Edwin Wafula will miss the crucial Sunday fixture against table toppers Tusker FC at Nakuru’s Afraha Stadium.

A win for Tusker will see the brewers clinch the 2016 KPL title and deny Gor Mahia a fourth consecutive league crown.

“The action has been taken due to indiscipline cases as some have been inciting others not to attend training while others have been affected because of under-performance,” club chairman Dan Mule said on Wednesday.

He assured fans that the club had enough players for head coach Stewart Hall to select for Sunday.

Hall was last week unveiled as the new Leopards coach in a bid to reverse fortunes at the club in a surprisingly disappointing season for Ingwe.

The players have been given 14 days to appeal the decision to the club's disciplinary committee.

Unfair treatment

According to Goal, one of the suspended players, Indeche, said that he was keen to help the team but the suspension was unfair to him.

"I injured my thigh against Gor Mahia in the 'Mashemeji Derby' and I could not make it to training the next day since it was swollen. But I have always given my best, if the club feels they do not need me there is always a way to go about it," Indeche said.

Gor Mahia are hoping their bitter rivals Leopards will grant them a favour on Sunday in order to force the KPL destiny to the final day where they will seek to defeat Tusker and claim a fourth consecutive league title.
